Choose Life!
Whether we realize it or not, we’re all on a journey here on this earth. Some of us are just starting out, some are somewhere in the middle, and some are wrapping up their final years. Surprisingly, however, the journey we are on is not necessarily determined by our chronological age. It has a lot to do with what we believe about our future.
Every day that we are blessed to wake up, we have the opportunity to completely change our lives. In the mornings, just before my feet touch the floor, I take the time to give thanks to God for protecting me through the night, and allowing me to open my eyes to a brand new day and all it has to offer. At that point, I have a choice of what I want to focus my attention on. I can either choose to recall all the things that happened yesterday that didn’t turn out the way I expected, or I can choose to amp up my expectations for the new day ahead. I’ll be the first to admit that there are many things that happened that I wish I could change. However, wisdom has taught me a very important lesson. There’s nothing I can do that will change my past, but I can do plenty to change my future.
Many of us are dissatisfied with where we have found ourselves from time to time, but we must take full responsibility for the decisions we made along our journey. Even though past behavior is said to be an indicator of future behavior, it doesn’t have to determine your life’s outcome. You can decide to change paths and get on a totally new road toward success by changing your mindset.
Changing your mindset leads to a change in behavior—whether that pertains to your career, your finances, your health, or your relationships. You get to decide how you want your life to play out. You get to choose. In Deuteronomy 30:19, God lets us know that “… I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live.” He wants us to choose life!
So, will you choose—life (abundance, joy, great relationships, good health, love, forgiveness, rewarding work) or will you choose death (financial lack, poor health, depression, broken relationships, mediocre performance, an unfulfilling job)? The choice is yours. Of course, most sane individuals will opt for “life”—at least in their minds; but will they ensure that their actions will follow suit? Will they take the steps that are necessary to see different results? Will they give up when faced with the pain, frustration, and discomfort that change often brings about, or will they persevere through those growing pains to see their dreams manifested? I’m not saying it will be easy, but it is necessary to stick it out.
Happiness and success come at a cost. There’s no way around it. There are no shortcuts and no magic formulas. The life we want requires effort, persistence, and a dogged determination. Before you were born, God equipped you with gifts and talents—all the tools you need to enjoy the life He created for. Your experiences were meant to sharpen those tools. He even sends people and resources your way to lend support. So, I repeat—the choice is up to you.
“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
Deuteronomy 30:19 NIV
Think about it. What tools did God equip you with? How are you using them? What will you choose this day—life or death?
