Are You Planning, or Just Dreaming?

When I was a child, I spent hours daydreaming about what my life would be like when I became an adult. Of course, at the time, I believed age 16 was the magic number. I thought that, as an adult, I would be able to do whatever I wanted to do. I could stay up as late as I wanted, eat a whole bowl of cake batter if I chose to, and definitely get a job and move into my own place.

I also had daydreams about who I would marry, how many children I would have (I already had the perfect names picked out), and the type of lifestyle I would enjoy. What an imagination I had!

As I grew into adulthood and began to experience life and all that comes with it, I realized that it takes more than daydreaming to have what you want in life. If you want to live life on your own terms, it takes diligence, patience, persistence, a good education (whether formal or the school of hard knocks), wisdom, and a great support network. But, most of all, it also takes a plan.

Unfortunately, too many of us go through life without a plan. Oh sure, we have ideas in our heads, but we don’t take the time to transfer what’s in our heads to paper. Why? Because we don’t really think it’s necessary. It’s as though we believe that if we let thoughts roll around in there long enough, we can make everything fall into place.

Well, to get what you want out of life, you need to be purposeful in your thoughts, decisions, and actions. Otherwise, you end up going in directions that take you totally off course. Many people spend years in careers or holding onto jobs that have nothing to do with where they really want to end up. They’ve set career goals, financial goals, and even relationship goals, but they haven’t actually planned how they will reach those goals. As a former wedding planner, I watched numerous couples plan ‘the perfect wedding’ but not give much thought at all to how to have a successful marriage.

“And then God answered: “Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in big block letters so that it can be read on the run. This vision-message is a witness pointing to what’s coming.” - Habakkuk 2:2-3 MSG

My friends, it’s not good enough just to dream about what you want. Investigate some great goal-setting techniques and plan out your journey. Not everything will go according to your plan, but at least having written goals will help you stay on course. If you need help in doing this, help is only a call away.

Over the years, I have helped so many individuals improve their performance and enhance the quality of their lives. In simple terms, I’ve helped  them discover their purpose and what they truly want for their lives and coached them through the steps to achieve their goals. In so many instances, we know what we want to accomplish but lack the fortitude to carry out our plan because of past hurts and old wounds. I’ve seen lives transformed and watched as confidence and self-worth were restored. In other words, I’ve helped them get unstuck so that their dreams could manifest.

If you want a better life, you don’t have to do this alone. Dreaming does not get the job done. A dream is meant to inspire, but it doesn’t yield results.
